Visiting Tokyo Station today

  • What it is: Tokyo's main rail terminal, opened in 1914 with a red-brick building by architect Tatsuno Kingo. Shinkansen for the Tokaido, Tohoku and Joetsu lines start here, and over 3,000 trains pass through daily.
  • Then and now: When this post was written the Marunouchi building was under restoration. It reopened on 1 October 2012 with its third storey and pre-war look restored, and the Tokyo Station Hotel reopened inside it on 3 October 2012.
  • Getting there: Use the Marunouchi exits for the brick facade and the two domes, where eagles and zodiac animals decorate the ceilings.
  • Tip: The Gransta shopping area inside the station has over 150 shops. Tokyo Station Gallery, inside the original brick building, holds changing exhibitions.
