Visiting Tsukiji Outer Market today

  • What it is: The old market quarter that stayed behind when the wholesale fish market moved to Toyosu in 2018. It has narrow lanes of seafood, kitchen-knife and grocery shops plus sushi counters.
  • Getting there: About 1 minute on foot from Tsukijishijo Station (Toei Oedo Line, Exit A1) or Tsukiji Station (Hibiya Line, Exits 1 and 2).
  • Hours: Shop hours vary. It is busiest from about 9:00 to 13:00, and most shops close by early afternoon. Many shops close on Sundays, Wednesdays and national holidays.
  • Admission: Free.
  • Tip: Bring yen cash, since many shops take only cash. Leave suitcases and strollers behind, and wear closed shoes because the floors get wet.
