Visiting Shimokitazawa today

  • Getting there: Shimokitazawa Station is served by the Odakyu Line and the Keio Inokashira Line. It is 7 minutes from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line.
  • Then and now: Odakyu trains moved to underground platforms on 23 March 2013, and work on the station carried on until 2018. Since March 2019 each line has had its own entrance and ticket gates, so to change lines you exit and re-enter.
  • Then and now: Reload, a complex of shops, cafes and restaurants, now stands on the former Odakyu track site. BONUS TRACK, a plaza with 15 shops, is about 5 minutes' walk from the station.
  • Tip: The area does not really get going until lunchtime, so plan on shopping in the afternoon and a cafe or bar in the evening.

Shimokitazawa is a popular area on the Odakyu and Inokashira Lines. On the weekend, the narrow streets around the station are full of people checking out the many stores and restaurants. The area has a relaxed feel about it. Next time I need a guide to show me some of the better places to eat.
