Meiji Jingu 明治神宮
Visiting Meiji Jingu today
- What it is: A Shinto shrine founded in 1920 to honour Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, set in about 70 hectares of forest in central Tokyo.
- Getting there: The entrance is about a minute's walk from JR Harajuku Station, then allow at least 10 minutes to walk through the forest to the main shrine.
- Hours: Sunrise to sunset, so times change each month (for example 5:00–18:10 in May, 6:40–16:00 in December). Some facilities inside keep shorter hours.
- Admission: The shrine is free. The Inner Garden asks for a ¥500 maintenance contribution.
- Tip: Visit the Inner Garden in June, when the irises are in bloom.
