Visiting Daikanyama T-SITE today

  • What it is: A cultural complex built around Daikanyama Tsutaya Books, billed as "the TSUTAYA for grown-ups" and themed as "A Library in the Woods". Small specialist shops are linked by garden paths. It stands on the former site of a Mito Tokugawa family residence.
  • The bookstore: Three buildings are joined by Magazine Street, a 55 m aisle of magazines from around the world. Six specialist sections branch off it: cuisine, travel, cars and motorcycles, architecture and design, art, and humanities and literature. You can browse almost any book with a coffee before you buy it.
  • Design: The white buildings are covered in a lattice of the letter "T". This design by Klein Dytham Architecture won a competition against 80 firms. It was the only bookstore in Japan named in Flavorpill's "The 20 Most Beautiful Bookstores in the World".
  • Getting there: 5 minutes on foot from Daikanyama Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. Tokyu Transses buses also run from Shibuya Station to the Daikanyama T-SITE stop.
  • Hours: Bookstore 9:00–22:00. Starbucks and SHARE LOUNGE 7:00–22:00. Other shops keep their own hours.
  • Tip: Overseas visitors can get tax-free shopping when spending ¥5,000 or more (before tax) in one shop on the same day; bring your passport. Parking (120 cars) is ¥400 per 15 minutes, with free time for purchases.
