Visiting Mt Fuji today

  • What it is: Japan's highest peak (3,776 m). Most visitors see it from below, around the Fuji Five Lakes on the north side.
  • Getting there: For classic views, go to Lake Kawaguchiko, or Chureito Pagoda in Arakurayama Sengen Park, about 10 minutes' walk from Shimoyoshida Station on the Fujikyu Line.
  • Best views: The peak is clearest on cold, dry mornings from November to February. In summer it is often hidden by haze by mid-morning.
  • Climbing: In 2026 the Yoshida Trail opened 1 July to 10 September; Fujinomiya and Gotemba from 10 July. Every trail charges ¥4,000 per climber, and Yamanashi caps the Yoshida Trail at 4,000 climbers a day.
  • Tip: On the Yoshida Trail the 5th-station gate closes 14:00-3:00 to climbers without a hut booking, and staff check for warm layers, rain gear and proper boots.
