Visiting Okayama Station today

  • What it is: JR station opened in 1891 and the main rail hub of Okayama. The Sanyo Shinkansen platforms are on the third level and the conventional lines on the ground floor, serving the Sanyo Main Line (including Hakubi Line and Ako Line trains), the Uno (Seto-Ohashi) Line, the Tsuyama Line and the Kibi Line.
  • Getting there and connections: The Nozomi takes about 3 hours 17 minutes from Tokyo and 35-40 minutes from Shin-Osaka. The Marine Liner crosses the Great Seto Bridge to Takamatsu in about 55 minutes. The Hakubi Line runs from Kurashiki across the Chugoku Mountains to Hoki-Daisen in Tottori.
  • Momotaro statue: Bronze statues of Momotaro and his dog, monkey and pheasant stand at the east exit. They have been moved to a temporary spot for the tram extension into the station square, and are due back near the new tram stop around March 2027.
  • Tip: For Okayama Korakuen and Okayama Castle, take the Higashiyama Line tram from the Okayama-Ekimae stop to Shiroshita (about 5 minutes) and walk about 10 minutes. The fare is ¥160 flat, or ¥400 for a one-day pass. Korakuen is ¥500 for adults (7:30-18:00 from 20 March to 30 September, 8:00-17:00 from 1 October to 19 March), the castle is ¥500 (9:00-17:30), and the combined ticket is ¥800.

Okayama Station

I took a few snap shots around Okayama Station when I was visiting recently. Looking back on them, I wish I had taken more. The weather was really nice…
