Visiting Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter today

  • What it is: A canal district of white-walled storehouses and willow-lined streets. The Ohara Museum of Art, opened in 1930 as Japan's first private museum of Western art, is at its northern end. Ivy Square, a red-brick cotton mill from 1889, is about 300 m away.
  • Getting there: JR Sanyo Line trains from Okayama take 15-20 minutes (¥330). From the south exit of Kurashiki Station, the canal area is a 10-15 minute walk.
  • Admission: The district itself has no admission fee. The Ohara Museum costs ¥2,000 for adults and ¥500 for school students.
  • Hours: The Ohara Museum opens 9:00-17:00 from March to November and 9:00-15:00 from December to February, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It is closed on Mondays unless Monday is a public holiday.
  • Tip: The quarter is lit up from sunset until 22:00 (April-September) or 21:00 (October-March), so it is worth staying into the evening.
