Visiting Kamo River riverbanks today
- What it is: The river that runs north to south through central Kyoto. Walkways line both banks and are free to use at any time.
- Getting there: The Keihan Line runs along the east bank, with stations at Shichijo, Kiyomizu-Gojo, Gion-Shijo, Sanjo, Jingu-Marutamachi and Demachiyanagi. Join the path at any of them.
- Best time: Cherry blossoms line the path in spring and the leaves turn in autumn. From 1 May to the end of October, restaurants open dining decks over the river (noryo-yuka).
- Tip: Walk north to the Kamogawa Delta, where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet, about 3 minutes from Demachiyanagi Station. Its stepping stones, some shaped like turtles and plovers, were laid in 1993.
- Then and now: Heavy rain or a typhoon can flood the lower paths and the stepping stones, so check the weather before you go.
