Visiting Kamo River (Kamogawa) riverbanks, Kyoto today

Checked October 2026 · next check January 2027

Added by Shibuya246, separate from the original post above. Facts are checked every quarter against the sources below. Check opening times and prices before you go.

What it is: The river through central Kyoto, with free walkways on both banks open at all hours.
Getting there: Keihan Line stations along the east bank include Gion-Shijo, Sanjo and Demachiyanagi. From Kyoto Station, city bus 4 or 205 goes to Demachiyanagi Ekimae.
Best time: Winter brings cold winds, but sunny, mild days are still good for a walk. Early morning and sunset give the best light on the water.
Tip: At the Kamogawa Delta near Demachiyanagi, a straight line of stepping stones crosses the river. They can be closed off or flooded after heavy rain or high water, so take care in icy or wet weather.

Best time

Cherry blossoms in early April, autumn leaves in November; riverside dining decks May to October
