Visiting Yamashita Park today

  • What it is: A seaside park opened in 1930, built on land reclaimed with rubble from the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. It runs about 750 metres along the waterfront. The park is always open and free.
  • Getting there: Motomachi-Chukagai Station (Exit 4) on the Minatomirai Line is about 3-5 minutes' walk. Kannai Station on the JR line is about 15 minutes on foot.
  • Admission: The Hikawa Maru, a 1930 ocean liner moored by the promenade, is a museum. It costs ¥300 and opens 10:00-17:00, with last entry at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays, or the next day if Monday is a holiday.
  • Best time: About 1,900 roses of 160 varieties bloom twice a year, in spring and autumn.
  • Tip: Chinatown is about 5 minutes' walk away. Yokohama Marine Tower next to the park has an observatory 100 metres up.

Yamashita Koen, Yokohama

Yamashita Koen in Yokohama is a popular place for people to relax and enjoy. Couples stroll up and down the waterfront, families picnic on the grass, children play. The park was formally constructed after the 1923 earthquake, but has a history back to the opening of the Port to the West over 150 years ago.
