Visiting Hotel New Grand today
- What it is: A classic hotel facing Yamashita Park, opened on 1 December 1927. The main building was designed by Jin Watanabe, who also designed Ginza Wako, and still looks much as it did at opening. It is a Yokohama City certified historic building (1992) and a Modern Industrial Heritage site (2007).
- MacArthur: General Douglas MacArthur landed at Atsugi on 30 August 1945, went straight to the hotel and stayed three days. His room, 315, is now offered as the MacArthur's Suite (56 square metres, main building, 1-2 guests).
- Getting there: Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line is about 1 minute on foot from Exit 1 (stairs) or 2 minutes from Exit 2 (elevator). JR Ishikawacho Station is about 13 minutes' walk.
- Booking: Check-in is 14:00 and check-out 11:00. Rooms are booked through the hotel's own site, and the phone number is 045-681-1841. A renovation of main building rooms and corridors is provisionally planned for 19 January to 20 March 2027, with main building room bookings suspended for that period.
- Tip: The Cafe on the main building's first floor serves three dishes the hotel says it created: seafood doria, spaghetti Napolitan and pudding a la mode. It is open 10:00-21:30 (last order 21:00), and drinks-only visits are not accepted from 11:00 to 14:00.
