Gokayama 五箇山
Visiting Gokayama today
- What it is: Mountain hamlets of steep thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses, a World Heritage Site with Shirakawa-go. Ainokura and Suganuma are smaller and quieter than Shirakawa-go, and people still live there.
- Getting there: World Heritage bus from JR Takaoka Station to Ainokura-guchi, about 1 hour 15 minutes, then about 5 minutes on foot.
- Hours: Ainokura 8:30–17:00, open every day.
- Admission: Free to walk; drivers pay a parking preservation fee.
- Tip: These are lived-in villages, so keep out of private gardens. Stay overnight in a gassho inn to see them after day-trippers leave.
