Visiting Central Kanazawa (Kenroku-en today
- What it is: Central Kanazawa is compact enough to cover on foot. Kenroku-en (11.4 hectares, once the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle) and Kanazawa Castle Park sit side by side, and Korinbo, with Katamachi next to it, is the main shopping quarter nearby.
- Getting there: The Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Kanazawa Station in about 2.5 hours from Tokyo. From the station East Gate, the Kanazawa Loop Bus (¥220 adults, ¥110 children, operated by Hokutetsu) runs to the Kenrokuen Garden / Kanazawa Castle Park stop, then it is about 3 minutes' walk to the garden. A city bus to Korinbo takes about 8 minutes, then about 7 minutes' walk to the Castle Park.
- Admission and hours: Kanazawa Castle Park is free. Kenroku-en is ¥320 for adults and ¥100 for ages 6-17, and free for over-65s with ID. Both are open 7:00-18:00 from 1 March to 15 October and 8:00-17:00 from 16 October to the end of February, with no closing days. Kenroku-en lets visitors in free for a short early-morning period before opening; the hours vary by month.
- Best time: Kenroku-en is known for plum and cherry blossom in spring and autumn leaves in autumn. The yukitsuri rope supports for the pine branches go up between 1 November and mid-December.
- Tip: The Castle Park's Hishi Yagura and Gojukken Nagaya are a separate ¥320 for adults (9:00-16:30, last entry 16:00), or ¥500 as a combined ticket with Kenroku-en.
