Visiting Usa Jingu today

  • What it is: The head shrine of Japan's tens of thousands of Hachiman shrines. Its vermilion main halls stand on a wooded hill.
  • Getting there: From JR Usa Station, take an Oita Kotsu bus bound for Nakatsu or Yokkaichi about 15 minutes to Usa Hachiman, then walk a short way.
  • Hours: Grounds open daily; check the shrine for treasure hall hours.
  • Admission: Grounds free. Treasure hall ¥300 adults, ¥200 junior and senior high, ¥100 elementary.
  • Tip: At Usa, the custom is to bow twice, clap four times and bow once, instead of the usual two claps.
