Visiting Beppu Hells today
- What it is: Seven 'hells', boiling hot spring pools to look at rather than bathe in. They include the cobalt-blue Umi Jigoku and blood-red Chinoike Jigoku.
- Getting there: Bus 2, 5 or 24 from the west exit of JR Beppu Station to Kannawa or Umi-Jigokumae, about 20 minutes. Chinoike and Tatsumaki are a short bus ride further on.
- Hours: 8:00–17:00, open every day.
- Admission: Each hell charges separately, and a combined ticket covers all seven.
- Tip: Five hells are clustered in Kannawa. Eat a jigoku-mushi lunch steamed over the vents there before taking the bus to the other two.
