Nara Park deer 奈良公園
Visiting Nara Park deer today
- What it is: A large free park in central Nara where around 1,400 wild sika deer, a protected natural treasure, roam among the temples and lawns.
- Getting there: About an 8-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. From JR Nara, walk 20 minutes or take the city loop bus about 7 minutes to Kencho-mae.
- Hours: Open all day, every day.
- Admission: Free. Deer crackers (shika senbei) are sold by vendors around the park.
- Tip: Feed the deer only shika senbei, never tease them, and take your rubbish with you, since the park has no bins. Keep away from fawns and protective mothers in spring.
Best timeGood any time of yearYear-round. Fawns are born in early summer, and bucks can be edgy during the autumn rut.
Checked against: Nara City Tourism: Nara Park · Nara Deer Preservation Foundation newsletter 2026 (PDF). Check opening times and prices before you go.
