Kasuga Taisha 春日大社
Visiting Kasuga Taisha today
- What it is: Nara's grand Shinto shrine, founded in 768, with vermilion halls, about 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns, and a forest approach.
- Getting there: From JR or Kintetsu Nara, take the bus to Kasuga Taisha Honden (about 11–15 minutes). Or walk through Nara Park from Todai-ji.
- Hours: Grounds 6:30–17:30 (March–October), 7:00–17:00 (November–February). Manyo Botanical Garden 9:00–16:30, closed Tuesdays from June to March.
- Admission: Grounds free. Inner main hall area ¥700. Treasure hall ¥500. Manyo Botanical Garden ¥500.
- Tip: All the lanterns are lit only during the Mantoro festivals in early February and mid-August. The rest of the year, the dark lantern room inside gives a sense of it.
