Visiting Nishiki Market today
- What it is: 'Kyoto's kitchen' — a narrow covered street of about 130 food shops stretching some 390 m, with roots going back over 400 years.
- Getting there: Subway Karasuma Line from Kyoto Station to Shijo, then about 3 minutes' walk; or City Bus 5 to Shijo Takakura (¥230) and 2 minutes' walk.
- Hours: Each shop sets its own hours (e.g. knife-maker Aritsugu 10:00–16:00, closed Wednesdays); go late morning to mid-afternoon.
- Admission: Free
- Tip: The market asks you not to eat while walking — eat in front of or inside the shop where you bought it.
