Kawaramachi-dori and Shijo Kawaramachi 河原町
Visiting Kawaramachi-dori and Shijo Kawaramachi today
- What it is: A main street running north to south along the west bank of the Kamo River. The stretch between Sanjo and Shijo is one of central Kyoto's main shopping streets. Takashimaya and Kyoto Marui are at the Shijo Kawaramachi crossing.
- Getting there: Kyoto-kawaramachi Station (Hankyu Kyoto Line) is under the Shijo Kawaramachi crossing. Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station on the Tozai subway line is at the northern end of the shopping stretch.
- Best time: The Gion Matsuri float processions pass along the street in July, including the after-festival parade on 24 July.
- Then and now: Hankyu's Kawaramachi Station was renamed Kyoto-kawaramachi on 1 October 2019. Smoking is banned on Shijo and Kawaramachi streets, and by 2021 the overhead utility poles had been removed.
