Visiting Kiyamachi-dori and the Takase River today

  • What it is: The Takase River is a shallow canal dug around 1611 by the merchant Suminokura Ryoi to carry goods into central Kyoto. Kiyamachi-dori runs beside it under willows and cherry trees, lined with restaurants and bars.
  • History: Ichinofunairi, near Nijo, is the last surviving boat basin and a designated historic site, with a restored Takase boat moored there.
  • Getting there: Ichinofunairi is about 5 minutes' walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station (Tozai Line); the Shijo end is a few minutes from Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station (Hankyu).
  • Tip: Walk it in daylight to see the water, then come back in the evening for dinner. Pontocho is one street east.
