Visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine today

  • Then and now: In May 2023 the main hall began its first major restoration in 124 years, and the deity was moved to a temporary hall. The restored hall was shown to the press on 18 May 2026, and the temporary hall, built to last three years, was to be taken down after mid-2026.
  • Getting there: Take the Nishitetsu line from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and change at Futsukaichi for Dazaifu (25-40 minutes, ¥480). The Dazaifu Liner bus from Hakata Bus Center takes about 40 minutes and costs ¥800.
  • Best time: The shrine's 6,000-plus plum trees bloom in early March. The Plum Blossom Festival is held on 25 February.
  • Tip: A free purification ritual is held every day at 8:30. The Kyushu National Museum is a 5-minute walk from the shrine.
