Fukuoka Yatai 福岡の屋台
Visiting Fukuoka Yatai today
- What it is: Fukuoka's roadside food stalls (yatai), with a counter and a few stools, serving mostly ramen plus oden, gyoza, yakitori and tempura. The city's tourism site counts over 100 stalls, spread over three main areas: Nakasu, Tenjin and Nagahama.
- Getting there: Nakasu and Tenjin are each a few minutes' walk from a station: Nakasu-Kawabata Station on the Fukuoka City Subway for Nakasu, and Tenjin Station (subway) or Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station for Tenjin. Nagahama is in Chuo-ku; the city's recruitment pages list it as one of the three yatai areas.
- Hours: Stalls open from about 18:00 at the earliest, most between 18:30 and 19:00, and most close around midnight. Stalls stay closed in stormy weather or if the owner is unwell, and days off vary, so check the stall.
- Paying and ordering: Most stalls take cash only (about 10% accept cards), and you pay when you leave. Order at least one drink and one dish per person, and check the menu prices first. Most stalls have no cover charge, though some bar-type ones do.
- Tip: Seating is limited and shared, so groups of 2 to 3 get in most easily. There are no toilets at the stalls, so go before you sit down. No raw food is served.
