About Yatsuhashi

  • What it is: Baked yatsuhashi is a hard, cinnamon-flavoured cracker curved like a koto harp. Nama yatsuhashi is the soft, steamed dough, usually folded into a triangle around red bean paste.
  • Flavours: Cinnamon is the classic. Matcha, black sesame, chocolate, strawberry, sakura and seasonal flavours are common, especially for nama yatsuhashi.
  • Where to try it: Souvenir shops all over Kyoto, many with free tastings, including at Kyoto Station, along Shijo-dori, and on Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka on the way up to Kiyomizu-dera.
  • Tip: Baked yatsuhashi keeps for up to three months and travels well. Nama yatsuhashi has no preservatives, so eat it soon after buying.
