About Oden

  • What it is: Ingredients such as daikon radish, boiled eggs, konnyaku, chikuwa and other fish cakes, fried tofu and beef tendon, slowly stewed in dashi. Karashi mustard is the usual condiment.
  • Where to try it: Convenience stores keep a pot by the till: choose your pieces and they go into a small or large cup. It is also sold at yatai food stalls, izakaya and specialist oden restaurants.
  • Shizuoka oden: Shizuoka's version has a dark broth, everything on skewers, black hanpen fish cake, and a sprinkle of aonori and fish powder. It is sold at old sweet shops (dagashiya) and in the city's oden alleys, which grew out of food stalls.
  • Season: Traditionally a winter food to warm you up, though many shops now sell it all year.
  • Price: At convenience stores, around a hundred yen per piece.
