Visiting Shuzenji Onsen today

  • What it is: A quiet hot-spring village in a river valley on the Izu Peninsula. It grew up around Shuzenji temple, said to have been founded by Kukai in 807, and has a riverside bamboo-grove path.
  • Getting there: From Mishima Station (Shinkansen), take the Izuhakone Railway about 32 minutes to Shuzenji Station, then a bus about 10 minutes to the Shuzenji Onsen terminus.
  • Hours: The village is open at all times. Shuzenji's treasure hall is open 8:30–16:00 (until 16:30 April–September).
  • Admission: Free to walk around. Baths and the treasure hall charge separately.
  • Tip: Tokko-no-yu, the legendary riverside spring, is for looking at only: no bathing or footbaths. Walk the bamboo path in the evening when it is lit.
