Visiting Kawagoe Koedo old town today

  • What it is: A merchant town nicknamed Little Edo, with about 30 black-plastered kurazukuri storehouses along Ichibangai, the Toki no Kane bell tower and a candy-shop alley.
  • Getting there: Tobu Tojo Line express from Ikebukuro to Kawagoe, about 30 minutes, or Seibu limited express from Seibu-Shinjuku to Hon-Kawagoe, about 45 minutes.
  • Hours: The streets are open at all times; most shops open in the daytime.
  • Admission: Free
  • Tip: Use the Koedo loop bus day pass to get from the station to the old town. Weekday mornings are much quieter.
