Visiting Echigo-Yuzawa today

  • What it is: A snow-country hot spring town, the setting for Kawabata's novel Snow Country. Ski areas are close by, and the station has a sake museum with tastings.
  • Getting there: Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa, fastest about 66 minutes.
  • Hours: Town sights and baths keep their own hours.
  • Admission: Free to visit; sights charge separately.
  • Tip: Try sake at Ponshukan inside the station. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway climbs to an alpine garden in about 7 minutes.
