Visiting Sakurajima today

  • What it is: One of Japan's most active volcanoes, rising 1,117 m across the bay from central Kagoshima. Lava fields, observatories and roadside footbaths line its coast.
  • Getting there: From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, tram Route 2 to Suizokukan-guchi (about 23 minutes) and walk 8 minutes to the ferry terminal; then the Sakurajima Ferry.
  • Hours: Ferries run frequently through the day; check the timetable for late sailings.
  • Admission: Ferry adults ¥250, children ¥130, paid on arrival at Sakurajima (fares rose 1 July 2024).
  • Tip: Eruption alert level 3 (no entry near the crater) has applied through 2026; check advisories and carry a mask or umbrella for ash.
