Visiting Atomic Bomb Dome today

  • What it is: The former Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, designed by the Czech architect Jan Letzel and completed in 1915. It stood about 160 m from the hypocentre. The city decided to preserve it in 1966, and it became a World Heritage Site in 1996.
  • Getting there: From the south exit of JR Hiroshima Station, take streetcar line 2 or 6 to the Genbaku-dome Mae stop (about 20 minutes).
  • Tip: You can view the Dome only from outside its perimeter fence. There is no public parking nearby except for tour buses.
  • Best time: The Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in Peace Memorial Park on 6 August each year, from 8:00 to 8:50. A minute's silence is held at 8:15.
  • Then and now: The city inspects the structure about every three years. Since 2024 it has mainly used drones, so the Dome is less often covered in scaffolding.
