Kusatsu Onsen 草津温泉
Visiting Kusatsu Onsen today
- What it is: A mountain hot spring town built around the Yubatake, a steaming field of wooden channels carrying about 4,000 litres of spring water a minute.
- Getting there: JR limited express from Ueno to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi (about 2.5 hours), then JR Bus to Kusatsu Onsen, about 25 minutes (¥780).
- Hours: Yubatake open at all times and lit until midnight. Sainokawara outdoor bath 7:00–20:00 (9:00 from December to March).
- Admission: Yubatake free. Sainokawara outdoor bath ¥800 adults.
- Tip: Watch the yumomi water-stirring show at Netsunoyu by the Yubatake, held daily.
