Visiting Maruoka Castle today

  • What it is: A small castle keep said to date from 1576, the only original keep left in Hokuriku, roofed with about 6,000 stone tiles.
  • Getting there: From JR Fukui Station West Exit, Keifuku bus Maruoka Line about 50 minutes.
  • Hours: 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:30).
  • Admission: ¥450 adults; ¥150 elementary and junior high.
  • Tip: The stairs inside are very steep with ropes to hold, so wear shoes you can manage in socks and keep hands free.
