Dogo Onsen Funaya 道後温泉 ふなや
Visiting Dogo Onsen Funaya today
- What it is: A ryokan in Dogo Onsen founded in the Kan'ei era (around 1627). Rakuten Travel's guide says writers Natsume Soseki and Masaoka Shiki stayed here, as have members of the imperial family.
- Getting there: About 3 minutes' walk from Dogo Onsen Station on the Iyotetsu tram line. From Matsuyama Airport it is about 35 minutes by limousine bus, and about 30 minutes by car from Matsuyama IC.
- How a stay works: Check-in is 15:00 (last check-in 24:00) and check-out is 10:00. Dinner and breakfast are served at the inn, with riverside dining by the garden from 1 April to late October. Rooms range from Japanese and Japanese-Western rooms to suites, and plans are booked through the official site (Japanese) or its English booking page.
- Baths: Two baths, the cypress Hinoki-yu and the granite Mikage-yu, use 100% Dogo spring water. The men's and women's sides switch between morning and evening.
- Tip: The public bathhouse Dogo Onsen Honkan is nearby, about 5 minutes' walk from Dogo Onsen Station. The Kami-no-yu bath alone is ¥700 for adults and ¥350 for children, open 6:00-23:00 (last entry 22:30). Adding a second-floor rest room is ¥1,300, open 6:00-22:00 (last entry 21:00). It closes for one day in December.
