Chiba Urban Monorail 千葉都市モノレール
Visiting Chiba Urban Monorail today
- What it is: A suspended monorail, with the train hanging below the track, that opened in 1988. At 15.2 km it is recognised in Guinness World Records as the longest suspended monorail in the world. Line 1 runs from Chibaminato to Kenchomae (3.2 km) and Line 2 from Chiba to Chishirodai (12.0 km).
- Getting there: Chiba Station on the monorail is about 2 minutes' walk from JR Chiba Station through a connecting passage. Both lines call at Chiba.
- Fares: From Chiba, the adult ticket fare is ¥200 to Chibaminato or Kenchomae, ¥340 to Dobutsukoen (about 12 minutes) and ¥480 to Chishirodai (about 25 minutes), with IC card fares a few yen lower. These come from the operator's fare table dated 1 October 2019, so check the station fare board.
- Passes: The Holiday Free Ticket (Saturdays and holidays) and the Lunch Outing Free Ticket (weekdays, 10:00-18:00) are each ¥630 for adults and ¥320 for children. The 2-Day Free Ticket is ¥1,050 and ¥530. They are sold only on the day of use at Chiba, Chishirodai, Tsuga and Chibaminato stations.
- Along the way: Chiba Zoological Park is a 1-minute walk from Dobutsukoen Station. Chiba Castle and Inohana Park are about 7 minutes' walk from Kenchomae, and Chiba Port Tower about 12 minutes from Chibaminato. Mt Fuji can sometimes be seen from the train on clear days.
