About Tonkatsu

  • What it is: Breaded, deep-fried pork, a little like schnitzel. Choose hire (lean tenderloin) or rosu (fattier loin).
  • How to eat it: With mustard and tonkatsu sauce, a thick Worcestershire-style sauce, drizzled on or for dipping.
  • Katsu sando: Tonkatsu and shredded cabbage in white bread with sauce or mayonnaise. It is a popular takeaway at railway stations and kiosks.
  • Other dishes: Katsudon is tonkatsu cooked with egg and onion over rice, and katsu curry comes topped with curry sauce.
  • Where to try it: Tonkatsu restaurants, set-meal canteens, and as bento or katsu sando at convenience stores and department-store food halls. Restaurant tonkatsu is roughly 800 to 1,500 yen.
