The earthen walls of Nagamachi.

In the early evening I walked to Nagamachi, where the Maeda family's samurai lived below the castle.

The narrow lanes are lined with earthen walls and old gates, and small canals run alongside them. It was quiet once the day visitors had gone.

In winter the walls are covered with straw mats to protect them from the snow, which is a famous sight of its own.

I took these photos in October 2010 and only got round to posting them in 2026.
