Visiting Zao snow monsters today

  • What it is: In midwinter, wind-driven snow and ice coat the fir trees near the summit of Mount Zao, turning them into shapes known as snow monsters. Zao Ropeway carries visitors up to see them.
  • Getting there: Bus from JR Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen, about 37 minutes (¥1,000), then Zao Ropeway to Jizo Sancho Station.
  • Hours: Ropeway lower line 8:30–17:00; the last ride up to the summit leaves the base at 16:00. Service stops in bad weather.
  • Admission: Ropeway round trip to Jizo Sancho ¥4,400 adults, ¥2,200 children.
  • Tip: Dress for deep cold and wind at the top. Evening light-ups and snow-vehicle night tours run in winter; check the ropeway for dates.
