Visiting Shirahama today

  • What it is: A beach and hot spring resort on the Kii Peninsula. It has the white-sand Shirarahama beach, the Engetsu-to arch island, and Sakino-yu, an ancient rock bath at the sea's edge.
  • Getting there: JR to Shirahama Station, about 2.5 hours from Shin-Osaka. Shirarahama beach is about 10 minutes by bus, and Sakino-yu is about 15 minutes by Meiko Bus to Yunosaki plus a 5-minute walk.
  • Hours: Sakino-yu 8:00–17:00 (to 18:00 April–June and September, 7:00–19:00 July–August), last entry 30 minutes before closing.
  • Admission: Beach free. Sakino-yu ¥500.
  • Tip: Sakino-yu has no soap or showers, so it is a soak-only bath. Watch the sunset through Engetsu-to's arch from the shore.
