Tottori Sand Dunes 鳥取砂丘
Visiting Tottori Sand Dunes today
- What it is: Japan's largest dune field, on the Sea of Japan coast. Its highest ridge, Umanose, rises 47 m, and the Sand Museum next door shows giant sand sculptures.
- Getting there: Bus from JR Tottori Station, about 20–22 minutes. The Loop Kirinjishi bus also runs on weekends and holidays. Bring cash, because IC cards are not accepted.
- Hours: The dunes are open 24 hours.
- Admission: The dunes are free. Sand Museum ¥800 adults. Dune lift ¥300 one way, ¥400 return.
- Tip: Go early morning for wind ripples without footprints. Wear sneakers and carry water, because there is no shade and summer sand can approach 60°C.
