Visiting Museum of Maritime Science and the Soya today

  • What it is: A maritime museum opened in 1974. Today the only part open to visitors is the Soya, Japan's first Antarctic research ship (built 1938), moored beside the site since 1979.
  • Then and now: The main building closed in September 2011. The annex and outdoor exhibits closed on 28 January 2024, and demolition of the main building began in 2024. The museum says it is looking for a new site.
  • Getting there: Yurikamome to Tokyo International Cruise Terminal Station (formerly Fune-no-Kagakukan Station), or Rinkai Line to Tokyo Teleport, about 12 minutes on foot.
  • Hours: Soya boarding 10:00-17:00, last boarding 16:30. Closed Mondays (Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) and over New Year. The museum's future is under review, so check before you go.
  • Admission: Free.
