Kunozan Toshogu 久能山東照宮
Visiting Kunozan Toshogu today
- What it is: The ornate shrine where Tokugawa Ieyasu was first buried, on a cliff above Suruga Bay. Its lacquered main hall is a National Treasure.
- Getting there: Take a bus from JR Shizuoka Station about 45 minutes to Nihondaira, then the 5-minute Nihondaira Ropeway. Or climb the 1,159 stone steps from Kunozan-shita, about 20 minutes. No road reaches the shrine.
- Hours: 9:00–17:00 every day. Ticket sales end 10 minutes before closing.
- Admission: Shrine ¥700, museum ¥600, combined ¥1,200 (children ¥300 / ¥300 / ¥500). Fees rose on April 1, 2025.
- Tip: The Nihondaira Ropeway is suspended in December for upgrade work, so the stone steps are the only way up then.
