Oura Cathedral 大浦天主堂
Visiting Oura Cathedral today
- What it is: Japan's oldest surviving church (1864), a National Treasure and part of the Hidden Christian World Heritage sites. Here hidden Christians revealed their faith to French missionaries in 1865.
- Getting there: Nagasaki tram to the Oura Tenshudo area, then about a 5-minute walk uphill; the Oura Tenshudo bus stop is also about 5 minutes away.
- Hours: Opens 8:30; last entry 18:00 March–October and 17:30 November–February.
- Admission: Adults ¥1,000, junior high and high school ¥400, elementary ¥300; includes the Christian Museum next door.
- Tip: It is still a working church, so be quiet inside; combine it with Glover Garden just uphill.
