Visiting Kamikochi today

  • What it is: A high mountain valley in the Northern Alps, with the clear Azusa River, Kappa Bridge and level walking trails beneath the Hotaka peaks.
  • Getting there: Private cars are banned. From Matsumoto, Alpico train to Shin-Shimashima then bus, about 1.5 hours; or park at Sawando and take a shuttle bus (about 30 minutes).
  • Hours: Season runs from the opening festival (27 April 2026) to the closing ceremony on 15 November 2026; most facilities close in winter.
  • Admission: Free
  • Tip: June has fewer crowds and fresh greenery. Walking from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge is an easy introduction.
