Visiting Kyoto Botanical Garden today

  • What it is: Japan's oldest public botanical garden, opened in 1924. It covers about 24 hectares, has more than 10,000 species and cultivars and a large conservatory. Its cherry grove has about 500 trees of roughly 100 varieties.
  • Getting there: Take the Karasuma subway line from Kyoto Station to Kitayama Station (about 20 minutes). The garden is right outside Exit 3.
  • Hours: The garden is open 9:00-17:00, with last entry at 16:00. The conservatory is open 10:00-16:00, with last entry at 15:30. It is closed from 28 December to 4 January.
  • Admission: ¥500 for adults, ¥250 for high school students and over-65s, and free for junior high students and younger.
  • Best time: Hydrangeas peak around mid-June. In July the gates open at 7:00 so visitors can see the lotus pond before the flowers close.
