Arashiyama and Togetsukyo Bridge 嵐山
Visiting Arashiyama and Togetsukyo Bridge today
- What it is: A busy district on the western edge of Kyoto, centred on Togetsukyo Bridge over the river. The bridge dates back to the Heian period and was rebuilt in the 1930s. The quieter area to the north is Sagano.
- Getting there: From Kyoto Station, the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama takes about 15 minutes (¥240), then walk 5-10 minutes. The Keifuku Randen from Omiya and the Hankyu line via Katsura are alternatives.
- Best time: Early April for cherry blossoms and the second half of November for autumn colours. These are also the most crowded times.
- Tip: Come by train, not bus or car, because of traffic jams. Rowing boats can be hired on the river, and cormorant fishing cruises run from July to late September from the pier near the bridge.
