Visiting Amanohashidate today
- What it is: A pine-covered sandbar about 3.6 km long across Miyazu Bay, and one of Japan's three most famous scenic views. Chionji Temple stands near the southern end.
- Getting there: The JR Hashidate limited express runs direct from Kyoto in about 2 hours (¥4,800-5,400), but there are only a few trains a day. You can also take a limited express to Fukuchiyama and change to the Kyoto Tango Railway. Seat reservations are required on the limited expresses.
- Tip: Amanohashidate Station is a short walk from the southern end of the sandbar. Walking across takes about 45 minutes; rental bicycles cost about ¥500 for two hours and take about 15 minutes.
- Admission: Amanohashidate View Land, the viewpoint above the station side, costs ¥850 for adults, including the return lift or monorail. It is a 5-minute walk from the station and is open 9:00-17:00 from 1 October to 15 November and 9:00-16:30 from 16 November to 15 February.
