  • What it is: A 1607 castle with famously steep stone walls. Its keep was rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake and reopened in 2021. Full restoration is targeted for fiscal 2052.
  • Getting there: Tram from JR Kumamoto Station, about 15 minutes, to Kumamotojo Shiyakushomae, then about a 10-minute walk.
  • Hours: 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:00. Closed 29 December.
  • Admission: ¥800 high school and older, ¥300 elementary and junior high.
  • Tip: A 28 July 2026 earthquake collapsed 27 more stone-wall sections. The park reopened on 13 August 2026 with the keep and elevated walkway open, but check for closed areas.
