Visiting Shimanto River today

  • What it is: Often called Japan's last clear-flowing river. Low 'chinkabashi' bridges without railings let floodwaters pass over them.
  • Getting there: Tosa Kuroshio Railway to Nakamura Station in Shimanto City. Rental bikes from the tourist association are a short walk from the station.
  • Hours: The riverside is open at all times. Bike rental 8:30–17:30, open year-round.
  • Admission: Free. Bike rental ¥1,000 for up to 5 hours (city or mountain bike), ¥2,000 e-bike.
  • Tip: Cycle out to the Sada chinkabashi, the closest submersible bridge to town. Do not cross any of the bridges when the water is high.

Late spring to autumn for canoeing and cycling; heavy rain can submerge the bridges.
