Visiting Kotohira-gu today

  • What it is: A hillside shrine to the guardian of seafarers. A long staircase climbs through the town: 785 steps to the main shrine, 1,368 to the inner shrine.
  • Getting there: From Okayama, JR limited express Nanpu to Kotohira Station (about 53 minutes), then walk through the town to the foot of the steps.
  • Hours: We could not confirm hours on an official page.
  • Admission: Free to climb and visit the shrines.
  • Tip: Start early to beat the heat and crowds, and wear good shoes; the inner shrine is another 583 steps beyond the main hall.
