Visiting Geibikei Gorge boat ride today

  • What it is: A flat-bottomed boat poled by a boatman through a quiet gorge of tall cliffs, with folk songs on the way. The round trip takes about 90 minutes.
  • Getting there: JR Ofunato Line from Ichinoseki Station to Geibikei Station, about 30 minutes, then about 5 minutes on foot.
  • Hours: Boats 8:30–16:00 from 1 April to 5 November, ending earlier in November; 9:30–15:00 from late November to March.
  • Admission: Boat ride ¥2,000 adults, ¥900 elementary students.
  • Tip: In snowy months the boats carry kotatsu heated tables; the hot-pot meal on board must be booked ahead.
